The myth of Alcyone

Alcyone was the daughter of the wind god Aeolus and wife of Cykes, king of Trachina. The couple lived happily ever after, but once Alcyone and Cykes dared to compare themselves to the divine couple Zeus and Hera, which angered Zeus. ...To punish them, Zeus sent a deadly storm while Cycas was on a sea voyage, drowning him. Alcyone, unable to bear the loss of her beloved, fell into deep grief and every day went to the shore to await his return. When she learned of his death, out of her great grief she threw herself into the sea to follow him. The gods, moved by her great love, transformed her into an alcyon bird. Since then, Alcyone builds her nest on the shore and lays her eggs during the "Alcyonides days", a period of calm and sunshine in the middle of winter when the winds stop, so that the Alcyone can lay her eggs. The myth of Alcyone symbolizes eternal love, faith and rebirth through sorrow.
